Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. — the Kazan Cathedral: Kazanskaya Ploshchad, 2.

Established in 1932, the museum snows the historical development of religion and the progress of materialistic and atheist outlook which opposes it. The collections of the exposition are based on monuments and documents of the Ancient world, Europe and Asia.

The building of the museum is a majestic architectural monument created by A. N. Voromkhin in 1801 — 18u. The Kazan Cathedral, where trophies of the Patriotic War of 1812 were collected and where the great general M. I. Kutuzov was buried, went down in history as the pantheon of Russian military glory. Such is the message of the remarkable monuments to M. I. Kutuzov and M. B. Barclay de Tolly (designed by sculptor B. I. Orlovsky and architect V. P. Stasov) erected in front of the cathedral in 1837.

The statues and basreliefs that adorn the facade and the interior of the cathedral were the work of the best sculptors of the time, viz. S. S. Pimenov, I. P. Martos and V. I. Demut-Malinovsky. The powerful colonnade of the Kazan Cathedral is part àø parcel of the aspect of the Nevsky Prospect while the Voronikhin grille set up in the lawi opposite the Cathedral Ulitsa Plekhanova impresses one with the high artistic value of it pattern.
