One of the earlier structures of the city built in 1783—1789 along strictly classical lines by architect D. Quarenghi. On the landing of the main staircase inside the building a coloured mosaic picture “The Poltava Battle” created by M. V. Lomonosov in 1762—1764 was put up on the occasion of the bicentenary of the Academy (1925).
