The world's oldest institution of higher learning in the field of mining; it was founded in 1773. The institute building is a remarkable architectural monument of the beginning of the 19th century. It is an inspired creation of architect A. N. Voronikhin and sculptors S. S. Pimenov and V.I. DemutMalinovsky. The abovementioned artists also designed the sculpture groups of “Heracles fighting Antaeus” and “Abduction of Proserpina by Pluto” erected in 1808 on both sides of the open staircase of the main entrance.
Prominent Russian men of science and academicians E. S. Fyodorov, A. P. Herman, A. P. Karpinsky, I. M. Gubkin and N. S. Kurnakov graduated from, and worked at the institute. G. V. Plekhanov attended it in 1874—1876.
