As early as in the middle of the 18-th century the Peter and Paul Fortress became the most appaling political prison of Russia.

Radishchev was imprisoned here. The leaders of the December uprising — P. I. Pestel, K. F. Ryleyev, P. G. Kakhovsky, S. I. MuravyovApostol and M. P. Bestuzhev-Ryumin languished and were executed in the Peter and Paul Fortress. In the years 1862—1864 N. G. Chernishevsky was confined here. Later on tsarism casemated in the fortress the Narodniks (Populists), proletarian revolutionaries and progressive men of Russia. Among these were Lenin's brother A. I. Ulyanov, poet M. I. Mikhailov, revolutionary N. E. Bauman and writer A. M. Gorky.
