The Peter and Paul Fortress

Peter and Paul Fortress: Ploshchad Revolyutsii (the Square of Revolution). Photos made in 70-th of 20 century.

Fortress, gaol and museum — these three words comprise the history of one of the most remarkable memorials of the struggle which the Russian people had waged to regain their ancient lands along the Neva River and also of a memorial to the heroic life and struggle of several generations of Russian revolutionaries. The day when the foundation of the fortress was laid, — May 16, 1703 — is regarded as the day of the foundation of Leningrad. The fortress was built to defend the Neva city from, the Swedish feudal lords. But as early as in the middle of the 18th century it became the most appaling political prison of Russia.

The Soviet style are retained in the text (including historical realities of the time corresponding to the period when the photo was taken).
