Summer Garden and Summer Palace Museum of Peter I.

The first garden of St. Petersburg — the Summer Garden — laid out in 1704 — and the architectural and sculptural ensemble connected with it constitute a remarkable memorial of the Russian culture of the beginning of the 18th century. On display here is the oldest and unique collection of garden sculpture numbering about 100 statues executed by the most prominent Venetian sculptors of the 17th and 18 th centuries Alvize di Taliapietra, Pietro Baratta, Marino Gropelli and Giovanni Bonazza.

The Summer Garden is separated from the Neva Embankment by a grille famous for the exquisite beauty of its pattern and designed in 1784 by G. Veldten and P. E. Yegorov. The Summer Palace of Peter I built in 1710—1714 by architect D. Trezini stands in the garden. At present it houses a museum which displays personal belongings of Peter I as well as furniture and objects of everyday life of Peter's time. A “Coffee House” erected in 1826 by architect C. Rossi is also preserved. In the southern part of the garden, near a pond, a gigantic vase of Alfdalen porphyry, the gift of the King î Sweden, was set up in the i83oies. The Summe Garden is associated with the name of grea writers who frequented it, viz. the fablewrite I. A. Krylov (his monument designed by P. Ê Klodt was unveiled in 185.5), A. S. Pushkin an T. G. Shevchenko.
