The silhouette of the Admiralty perpetuated on the medal “For Defence of Leningrad” symbolizes this cityhero and porttown, as well as the naval glory of our country. The building of the Admiralty was connected with the creation of the Russian navy and with the first years of the construction of the city. The then dockyard was also a fortress. It is on the Neva River that the first great Russian warship Poltava was launched on June 15, 1712. In the 1730 architect I. K. Korobov built the stone building of the dockyard.
The presentday building of the Admiralty, constructed in 1806—1823, is a masterpiece of world architecture and the best work of architect A. D. Zakharov. The “Admiralty needle” sung by Pushkin rises to the height of 72 metres. The wellproportioned central tower, the rich sculptural adornment of which was designed by F. F. Shchedrin, S. S. Pimenov and I. I. Terebenev, and also the two pavilions and the monumental facade of the building produce an indelible impression.
